New York, April 20 – Rev. Charles T. Riggs, editor of “The Orient” at Constantinople, had declared the Armenian massacres in Turkey have been checked through the efforts of German and Austrian diplomats. In his opinion 500,000 were killed. Revolutionary ideas, brought from Russia, he asserted, was largely responsible for the massacres. The Turks, he explained, turned on the whole people instead of the individuals fomenting revolutions. Religious hate and business jealousies led the Turks to great lengths. Millions of Turks, he said, are in dire need, and conditions are getting worse. Prices have risen from 500 to 1,000 percent.
